VIDEO: Great NASCAR Wrecks - Jimmie Johnson - Watkins Glenn
Before Jimmie Johnson made a name for himself in NASCAR Sprint Cup, he made his way up like everyone else. Sometimes I wonder what the heck Jeff Gordon saw in this kid, but four championships later, it's hard to argue that point.
Jimmie made his way up on the west coast, he didn't do very well but he had backing from ALLTEL, so he got TV coverage. Back in 2000 when he was racing in the Busch Series, now Nationwide, he had what I think is the stupidest wreck I have ever seen.
Watch the video, I don't see a tire going down. All I see is Jimmie making a huge mistake on an attempted pass and flying across the grass. It was all done at that point. Johnson's number 92 Alltel car launch in the air and he went along for the ride.
Then he celebrates, probably because he was ALIVE, by jumping on the roof in a style that we have seen many times since. Now its celebrating wins and championships.
I don't know what prompted Gordon to go to Rick Hendrick and say hire this guy and I want in on half his team, Gordon is listed as co-owner of the #48, but it seems like one of the smartest moves Jeff Gordon and Rick Hendrick have ever made.
What does Gordon think now that Jimmie is ready to pass him up on championships?
