Daytona 500: The Legend
The Great American race grew out of the beaches of Daytona where drivers would race along the white sand through ruts and dunes to show who had the most talent and skill. Big Bill France saw more than those races on the beach and in 1959 the first 500 mile race was run at Daytona International Speedway.
The first 500 was billed as the "500 Mile International Sweepstakes", and international it was. The first 500 consisted of 56 drivers from the United States, Canada and Peru. This "southern redneck" sport started out with international appeal.
