NASCAR Sprint Cup Results: 2011 Auto Club 400

Rain couldn't put a stop to the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series at Auto Club Speedway in California for the Auto Club 400 this weekend. Kyle Busch led the most laps in dominating fashion, but at the end, it was Kevin Harvick and Jimmie Johnson who took the checkered flag in first and second.

Kyle Busch was the only Joe Gibbs Racing driver with any luck at the race, finishing third. Denny Hamlin went out early with a bad engine at lap 105 and Joey Logano finished on the lead lap in 25th place. Matt Kenseth and Ryan Newman rounded out the top five. Newman took over second in the point standings while Kenseth jumped to tenth in the points. Kevin Harvick's win vaulted him into the top ten in standings while Carl Edwards sixth place finish gave him the points lead

Under new system, Sprint Cup starting positions hinge on strong finishes

There are mixed feelings about the way all the NASCAR rule changes have altered racing for the 2011 NASCAR Sprint Cup season, but the general feeling is that most fans are happier this season than they have been. The new points system is shaking out, and most of the usual suspects are finding their way back to the top of the standings, but others are fighting a battle from the back of the pack after poor starts to the 2011 season.

The biggest surprise in the top ten in points is Paul Menard. For years Menard has moved through out the Sprint Cup garage on the coat tails of his family sponsorship. Menards has always been a big money sponsor and in the last few seasons has carried the young driver from Yates Racing to Richard Petty Motor Sports and finally to Richard Childress Racing for 2011. After eight years of Sprint Cup experience and a strong owner, Menard is making the most of his opportunities and racing smart and hard

The top five drivers at Auto Club Speedway by the numbers

The NASCAR Sprint Cup Series jumps back across the country to California before returning to the east coast for several races. The Auto Club 400 at Auto Club Speedway will run on Sunday, March 27th. For some drivers this is one of the more important races of the year now that the 2011 owners points will take affect following the race. A bad finish or trouble on the track could amount to falling out of the top 35 for some.

For some of the under funded teams that start and park when necessary, that option is no longer open to them for this week. Five drivers hovering around 35th in the owner's points are separated by only 10 points. When every point matters, running a few laps and parking is out of the question

NASCAR Sprint Cup Lineup for the 2011 Auto Club 400

The NASCAR Sprint Cup Series swings back to the west coast for a run at the Auto Club Speedway for the 15th Annual Auto Club 400 Sunday, March 27, 2011. The race is schedule for a 3 p.m. start time. Juan Pablo Montoya continued his good start to the 2011 season by taking the pole with a speed of 184.653. Struggling Richard Childress Racing driver Jeff Burton also qualified in the top ten and will start on the inside of the fourth row.

Qualifying for Sunday's race was not without surprises. Recent heavy rain in California caused some track weeping and delayed the cars from hitting the track on time. Sprint Cup point leader Kurt Busch could only muster enough speed for a middle of the field start in the 23rd starting position while Jimmie Johnson who has owned the last several races at Auto Club Speedway could only find enough speed for sixth row start

NASCAR Sprint Cup’s top three season comebacks

The new NASCAR Sprint Cup Point system is still shaking out. There have been many surprises including Paul Menard sitting securely in the top ten as well as some drivers we would normally expect to see in the top ten or 15 falling so far behind, it looks as though their season could be in jeopardy. Jeff Burton, Clint Bowyer and Kevin Harvick were expected to pull the weight for Richard Childress Racing, but Burton and Bowyer are sitting way back in 24th and 29th respectively. Jamie McMurray was expected to make a run for the chase after stacking up one of the highest points totals in the last ten races of 2010. McMurray sits way back in 26th.

Under NASCAR's old system a driver could make up around 150 points per race. Under the new system, a win along with leading the most laps will allow a driver to make up a maximum of 47 points. Under the new NASCAR point system, will we see some of the dramatic comebacks like the top three season comebacks under the old point system

2011 NASCAR Sprint Cup Points Following Bristol

After the fourth race of the 2011 NASCAR Sprint Cup season the new point system is beginning to shake out. While some expected names are back on more familiar ground, some others are surprising the statisticians this season.

Surprise number one is Paul Menard. For years, it has been assumed that he bought his way in, but eight years of Sprint Cup experience and a solid team at Richard Childress Racing are paying off. Menard sits solidly in fifth in the points on the back of four top twenty finishes, including two top tens and one top five

Start And Park Stupidity: Jennifer Jo Cobb And 2nd Chance Motor Sports

So I have got a big opinion on what went on just minutes prior to the Nationwide Series race at Bristol on Saturday. Jennifer Jo Cobb vacated her seat five minutes before the race citing that she was never told that owner Rick Russell planned to start and park the car after wrecking at Las Vegas.

A lot of her fans came to her defense and slammed 2nd Chance Motorsports calling the owners liars. The harassment was so bad that the race team had to shut down their Facebook page. There was also a rumor that the personal phone numbers of Russell were given away. Cobb said she didn't know who did that

NASCAR Sprint Cup Results: 2011 Jeff Byrd 500 at Bristol Motor Speedway

Jimmie Johnson finally came back to life this weekend at Bristol Motor Speedway for the Jeff Byrd 500 presented by Food City, but his race leading 164 laps were not enough to overcome Kyle Busch as Busch once again swept the racing action at Bristol.

Busch held off both pole leader Carl Edwards and Jimmie Johnson to win his 33rd race of his NASCAR Sprint Cup Career to tie Speedy Thompson on the all time wins list. The top five was rounded out by Roush Fenway driver Matt Kenseth and Richard Childress Racing's rising star Paul Menard who solidified his early season points luck with another top five. Menard also lead a career high 35 laps to come in at the top of the list for RCR, just ahead of team mate Kevin Harvick who found trouble when traffic piled up behind a Jamie McMurray mid race

Truck Series Win Gives Kahne Momentum for Bristol

NASCAR Sprint Cup had the weekend off, and although some drivers took the chance to slide in an early vacation, one driver chose to race hard. While Kyle Busch slipped away to Cancun, Kasey Kahne slid behind the wheel of Busch's #18 Toyota Tundra at Darlington Raceway for the Camping World Truck Series Too Tough To Tame 200.

Kahne is now in his first full season with Red Bull Racing, but his first three races in 2011 have not been all that different from his last three races in 2010. Aside from a sixth place finish at Phoenix, his other two starts have been less than stellar. This past week he climbed up in the point standings by two and is skirting the outside of the top ten as well as finally joining NASCAR's power rankings sliding in at 12th place. Kahne is craving some kind of momentum that will propel him forward and help him find victory lane in the Sprint Cup series once again after coming up with donuts for the past two seasons

Starting Lineup for NASCAR's Jeff Byrd 500 at Bristol Motor Speedway

Cousin Carl Edwards was fast enough to take the pole for the NASCAR Sprint Cup Jeff Byrd 500 presented by Food City at Bristol Motor Speedway, but Ryan Newman's pole record of 14.90 remains intact. Edwards circled the half mile high banked bull ring at 128.014 miles per hour and a time of 14.989. Roush Fenway teammate Greg Biffle will start on the outside of row one.

The surprise for this round of qualifying at the most electrifying track on the Sprint Cup calendar was who ended up on row two. Regan Smith powered his Furniture Row Chevy around the track with a time of 15.040 to capture the third place starting position and Richard Childress Racing's Paul Menard continue to turn head with his best season to date. Menard managed a time of 15.045 to start fourth on the field. He continues to be the highlight driver from the RCR stable

Top Five Formula One Drivers of All Time

Formula One dates back to somewhere around 1907 although the sanctioning body organized and crowned its first Formula One Driver Champion, Nino Farina, in 1950. I found out the first time I did a top five list that not everyone will agree so with that in mind I put another top five list together, defining the top Formula One drivers of all time. It goes by championships and it goes by personality. There are a lot more drivers that can be added to the list, but none of these can be taken off the list. That's what happens when you have a series that has had some of the best drivers in the world compete for the title.

Top five Formula One teams ever

In the more than 60 years that Formula One has sanctioned Grand Prix races under their banner, several teams have written and continue to write the record books with the best drivers the sport has ever seen. It's hard to argue accomplishment. This top five list is based on constructors championships, World Driving Championships and the teams ability to lure and retain the best drivers in Formula One history.

1. Ferrari - The Italian team was formed by Enzo Ferrari back in 1929 and since the inaugural year of F1 racing has accumulated 16 constructors championship placing them at the top of the list. They have also had drivers who won 15 driving championships including the eight years of the first decade of the 21st century except 2006 and 2009. Ferrari's drivers have included champions such as Juan Manuel Fangio, Kimi Raikkonen, Gille Villeneuve and Mario Andretti and of course, Michael Schumacher

Inside a Formula One race car

This is article two in a series on F1, I was paid to write. Check it out and give me some feedback.

Formula One race cars are probably the most unique in competition today. The aerodynamics, engines, tires and technology combine to make these bullets take straights at speeds in excess of 220 miles per hour and lateral G-force in the turns of 5.2g. In comparison, the average NHRA Top Fuel Dragster can hit 6g on starting and when the parachute is deployed. The difference is that there are more than 11 turns on an F1 circuit and 50 to 70 laps per race

Fight in the NASCAR garage

If you have raced at any local level you know that tempers flare in the pits. It's part of racing and there is no way around it. I remember an incident that happened one season after driving off the track and pulling into my pit spot. I had an on-track incident that put a guy in the wall. Oh well, that's short track racing. Apparently one of that guy's relatives who had been a spectator didn't appreciate my driving and tried to start a fight in the pits.

This kind of reminds me of the incident that allegedly happened in the NASCAR garage at Las Vegas when Kevin Conway apparently had to call the police because he was assaulted by Robby Gordon. As it stands, the investigation has not gone very far as the police are having trouble finding anyone who was a witness to what Kevin Conway said was him being thrown to the ground after being confronted by Gordon

Kasey Kahne Dominates NASCAR Race at Darlington

The NASCAR Sprint Cup Series took an early weekend off this season, but there was still some competitive NASCAR action going on at "The Lady In Black". The NASCAR Camping World Truck Series visited Darlington Raceway on Saturday, March 12 for the Too Tough Too Tame 200.

Kasey Kahne, filling in for truck owner and driver Kyle Busch, returned to victory lane leading 95 of the 147 laps at the South Carolina track to bring home his third win in only four Camping World Truck Series starts. Ron Hornaday finished second holding off Todd Bodine and a charging Matt Crafton

Formula One racing for beginners

I write NASCAR, but Yahoo! Sports asked me to write a series of pieces on Formula One. I am a fan of every type of racing so I took them up on it. This is the first article in a series on Formula One. I hope to write many more throughout the whole season. Tale a look and tell me what ya think. The first five topics were picked for me, but I promise some in depth article on the teams, the drivers and the complete F1 season.

Tony Stewart Leads as NASCAR Sprint Cup Points Turn Upside Down After Week Three

After the 14th Annual Kobalt Tools 400 Las Vegas Motor Speedway , the points turned upside down once more as the settling continues to take place in NASCAR new points system. The news will shake out eventually, but continue to have drivers tied for several positions, while other driver fight to remain relevant at the beginning of 2011, while still others are coming out of relative obscurity to claim a position at the top.

Last weeks points leader Kyle Busch fell from the top to 14th after trouble this weekend at Las Vegas. Kurt Busch's ninth place finish not only let him hold on to his second, but now ties him for the points lead with Tony Stewart who continues to run up front although second this week at Las Vegas was disappointing after his dominant run for most of the race

Jeff Gordon & Kyle Busch Falter as Edwards Wins at Las Vegas

Tony Stewart led the most laps, but after a miscue in the pits he was left chasing Carl Edwards for the win in the third race of the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series Race at Las Vegas Motor Speedway. Carl Edwards returned to winning form as he dominated the closing laps while Stewart chased him for second place.

As Edwards did his customary celebratory back flip, Stewart was left wondered out loud on his radio , "Somebody tell me how we just lost this race." Juan Pablo Montoya sporting Clorox colors on his #42 Earnhardt Ganassi machine held off a charging Marcos Ambrose who completed his most successful weekend on an oval track, starting on the front row and finishing fourth. Ryan Newman rounded out the top five completing a great weekend for both entries for Stewart Haas Racing

The 2011 NASCAR Kobalt Tools 400 Lineup for Las Vegas Motor Speedway

The NASCAR Sprint Cup Series continues its west coast run with the Kobalt Tools 400 from Las Vegas Motor Speedway this Sunday, March 6. Qualifying went back and forth as several cars held the top spot including Richard Petty Motor Sports driver Marcos Ambrose who is out to prove he can be as competitive on an oval as he is on a road course circuit.

Only a few cars were standing between Ambrose and a pole start after he blistered the field and took the provisional pole by a full tenth of a second. Carl Edwards came close, but couldn't get the job done, missing the mark Ambrose set by 1/100th of a second. He showed his admiration for Ambrose by playfully bumping the driver from down under with the front of his Ford as Ambrose gave a garage interview

Wendell Scott: NASCAR remembers a legend in Las Vegas

Long before NASCAR's Drive for Diversity there was one man who just drove as hard as he could whenever he could. Wendell Scott was the first African American driver in what is now the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series.

This Friday, March 4th, is the 50th anniversary of this NASCAR pioneer's first race and to commemorate the occasion NASCAR will honor its first African American driver by having every car competing at Las Vegas Motor Speedway this weekend carry a commemorative decal emblazoned with the image of Wendell Scott

Charities sponsify for the NASCAR Nation

Who can forget the Toyota Sponsafier commercials that ran in 2010 with drivers like Kyle Busch, Denny Hamlin and David Reutimann sporting pink firesuits with red hearts driving pink Sprint Cup cars with cupid and baby seals for sponsor decals? Toyota brought attention to their drivers, their cars and NASCAR. Now charitable organizations are seeing the benefits of the new 2011 Sponsafier marketing effort and using that popularity to bring attention to their own efforts as well.
