I Eat, Sleep and Breathe NASCAR!! I have raced in several divisions on the local level and been a crew member for a NASCAR Modified Tour competitor. My involvement in the sport dates back to the beginning of NASCAR's modern era. I give you an experienced inside look at the sport including news directly from Charlotte, the heart of NASCAR competition.

So grab a cold drink, set up your chair, turn on the tube, put on your scanner head phones and get ready for SLURRED WORDS ON MOTORSPORTS.

SLURRED WORDS ON MOTORSPORTS IS ALL YOUR NASCAR NEWS IN ONE PLACE!!!!!

NASCAR deals with consequences of wholesale changes

For the first time in quite a while NASCAR saw a shortage of cars to fill out the field in the NASCAR Nationwide series while racing at Phoenix International Raceway. On The Sprint Cup side of NASCAR, the number of 'start and park' competitors has grown over the last several seasons due to the cost of racing and the lack of sponsorship in a tough economy.

Some competitors on the front lines of NASCAR's top series such as Brian Keselowski mentioned during the whirlwind of media attention that was Daytona Speedweeks that running NASCAR's second tier series was almost as expensive as running the Sprint Cup series. The new cars and bodies in the Nationwide Series are as expensive to replace as going out and buying a used Sprint Cup machine

Week 2: 2011 NASCAR Sprint Cup Point Standings

After the second week of competition on the NASCAR Sprint Cup circuit, points positions were swapped. Some drivers jumped up and some fell back. Other drivers find themselves in positions that they might find difficult to drive out of under NASCAR's newly implemented point system. The Busch Brothers find themselves on top of the standings with Kyle Busch leading the way and Kurt Busch trailing his younger brother by only three points.

Results of the 2011 NASCAR Sprint Cup Subway Fresh Fit 500 at PIR

Jeff Gordon led 138 of the 394 laps in the 2011 Subway Fresh Fit 500 at Phoenix International Raceway to end a losing streak that last almost three season. Gordon won after 66 races without
a win and after eight second place finishes last season. Several of which should have been wins for the Drive4Hunger driver.

Jeff Gordon Ends 66 Race Winless Streak

Five caution flags in the first 70 laps at Phoenix made the one mile flat track look more like a Saturday night race at Bristol. After the fifth caution, 13 cars were either in the NASCAR Sprint Cup garage or limping around the track with damage.

Teams, knowing the danger the new point system would put them in, worked feverishly to rebuild and get their cars back on the track either with new parts or without them. Several cars including pole sitter and early leader Carl Edwards, Jeff Burton, and Clint Bowyer returned with new front ends, while David Reutimann and rookie Andy Lally came back out without any front end looking like a NASCAR Whelen Modified

Starting Lineup for the 2011 NASCAR Subway Fresh Fit 500 at Phoenix International Raceway

Carl Edwards blistered the track qualifying record at Phoenix International Raceway circling the track in 26.224 seconds at a speed of 137.279 miles per hour. In fact, the top fifteen qualifiers topped the previous track record that was held by today's pole winner Edwards who continues his recent domination in Phoenix. Kurt Busch will sit on the outside of row one continuing to show the strength of his Penske Dodge after Daytona. Other surprises in the top ten in qualifying for the Subway Fresh Fit 500 include the Chevrolet of Regan Smith. The former NASCAR Sprint Cup Rookie of The Year is having the best season start that he has ever had after qualifying and running up front for the Daytona 500 and now qualifying fifth at Phoenix.

Tires and weather present challenges at Phoenix International Raceway

The newly paved track at Daytona gave the drivers, crews and owners several breaks throughout the week. The drivers had cars with a lot of grip that allowed them to race hard. The owners saved money on tires with less tire changing, and the crews had fast pit stops spending less time on pit road with most teams opting to just refuel or change left side tires instead of changing all four tires.

Phoenix International Raceway changes the complexion of racing completely. Competitors in all three of NASCAR's top series this weekend will need to drive their cars. Instead of having their foot in the gas all the way around the track, drivers will be braking in turns and planning passes without the help of a partner

Hendrick teams battle Roush teams at Phoenix

If past performance is going to tell the story at Phoenix International Raceway before the repaving and reconfiguration begins following the Subway Fresh Fit 500, then Hendrick Motorsports is primed to resume their dominance with drivers Jimmie Johnson and Mark Martin. Johnson has an average finish of 4.9 at PIR, while Martin has an average finish of 8.6.

Johnson is going to need all the luck and performance he can put together to make up points on leader Carl Edwards. The new Ford engine is strong and Edwards is hungry after his non-win put him first in the points following the Daytona 500. NASCAR figures point to Johnson as the favorite in driver ratings entering Phoenix, but Carl Edwards and Mark Martin are not far behind. Edwards also drove his Ford to victory last fall at Phoenix

Bad luck in Daytona raises the stakes at Phoenix

After a dramatic finish at Daytona where Trevor Bayne became the youngest driver to win the Daytona 500, the NASCAR Sprint Cup series moves on to Phoenix for the Subway Fresh Fit 500.

Ryan Newman is the defending champion of the race, but with the new change to the Sprint Cup point system Newman, who is now 20th in the point standings, as well as many other drivers are left with huge points deficits to make up for after the finish at Daytona

Pastrana-Mania vs. Bayne-O-Mania - Big stories overshadow Sprint Cup action at Phoenix

It may seem like it is supposed to be about the Sprint Cup series as NASCAR rolls into Phoenix International Raceway this week, but the big stories coming off of Daytona last week and the debut of the extreme sports star Travis Pastrana may change the focus of attention.

Trevor Bayne's win at Daytona is the story of the week, but the young driver has chosen to stick with a run at the championship in the NASCAR Nationwide Series instead of making a run for Sprint Cup Rookie of The Year. Bayne is in the middle of a media whirlwind and still pinching himself to make sure it is all real. The talent is there. He has been proving himself up the ladder for several years. The surprise at Daytona was that it was the biggest stage he could possibly have made a statement on. Although he has chosen to stay with his original decision to earn points for a Nationwide Championship, he will be competing in both Nationwide and Sprint Cup this weekend

Waltrip Penalized for Daytona Win

Fans have been raising questions about Michael Waltrip's emotional win 10 years to the day of Dale Earnhardt Sr's death and Waltrip's first win in the Daytona 500. Waltrip ran second most of the race to a strong truck driven by Elliott Sadler, but as the two came out of turn four, Waltrip drove his truck to the outside and muscled it past Sadler for the win. As he came across the finish line the right side of his rear spoiler was broken off and hanging from the tailgate of his #15 Toyota.

NASCAR 2011 Race 2: Phoenix International Raceway

After what was arguably a competitive Daytona 500, albeit an odd type of two by two love-bug style of racing, the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series, along with the Nationwide and Camping World Truck Series, moves on to Phoenix International Raceway for the second event on the 2011 NASCAR schedule.

A NASCAR Rookie Wins the 2011 Daytona 500

All the pseudo-NASCAR fans can cry a river and say it's not like it used to be. They can cry that restrictor plate racing is just 'follow the leader'. They can also whine that there is a NASCAR conspiracy to promote Dale Earnhardt Jr. What they can not argue is that the 2011 Daytona 500 produced a record number of lead changes. It produced more drivers teaming up to make a run to the front than ever before, and it showed that just about any two car combination was capable of running to the front.

NASCAR Rookies Make a Statement at Daytona

Daytona Rookies are not the bane of NASCAR veterans existence as they had been in years past. Although some rookies have done well in the Daytona 500 in the past, they were left out to dry by the veterans who chose to hook up and draft with more experienced drivers to make their way to the front.

With new pavement, new tires and new cars, several veterans are choosing rookies as drafting partners. In the first Gatorade Duel 150 held on Thursday, Jeff Gordon not only teamed with rookie driver Trevor Bayne, but also paired his Chevy up with Bayne's Wood Brothers Ford. The result was a combination that could drive to the front and hold their own against Ford, Chevy and Toyota multi-car teams

Waltrip Takes Another Emotional Daytona Win

The Camping World Truck Series first points race of the 2011 NASCAR season proved to be a wreck-fest. After several "big ones" only half the field remained and only 5 trucks left on the track had avoided any type of damage.

A green-white-checkered finish after a late race red flag following the final big race found Elliott Sadler and Michael Waltrip leading the field with Miguel Paludo and Jennifer Jo Cobb in third and fourth place

The Gatorade Duel 150 Results

JJ Yeley overcame a late race caution and learned from prior restarts what it took to win a spot in the Daytona 500. In a post race interview Yeley told reporters that the two car draft did not work until the cars got up to speed after two laps.

Yeley took that knowledge and placed his # 46 Red Line Chevy between the team cars of Kevin Conway and Joe Nemechek. Yeley then pulled ahead of Kevin Conway in the two lap dash to gain the final transfer spot in the first Gatorade Duel 150 today

No NASCAR conspiracy to help Earnhardt Jr.

NASCAR conspiracy theorists had a monkey wrench thrown into their theories this afternoon at Daytona International Speedway. As cars finally came out for NASCAR Sprint Cup practice after another long rain delay, Dale Earnhardt Jr. was caught up in a spin between Jimmy Johnson and Martin Truex Jr.

The car of Jamie McMurray and several others were coming up to speed after coming out on the track as Johnson, Earnhardt Jr., and Truex came up on them at full speed. Johnson was forced to check his brakes causing Earnhardt to check up. Truex was left with no where to go and hit Earnhardt from behind. Earnhardt and Truex spun down into the infield

Strong female drivers make waves at Daytona Speed Weeks

NASCAR is in search of that next female racer who has what it takes to compete with the guys and this might be the year that the women of NASCAR racing take their place. It's been a long time since the days of Janet Guthrie. Her name made the hair on the backs of other NASCAR competitors stand on end back in the 1970s. Not because she was a woman, but because when Guthrie showed up at the track she was threat for a top ten start and a top ten finish.

Daytona 500: The perfect first race of the NASCAR season

If there was ever any question which race should be the first race of the NASCAR Sprint Cup season it was answered way back in 1979 when Bobby Allison and Cale Yarborough brawled on the grass of The Daytona International Speedway in the first flag to flag nationally televised NASCAR race.

For fans who followed years before that the question was answered when Richard Petty and David Pearson bumped and banged fenders out of turn four before wrecking 50 yards from the checkered flag of the Daytona 500

NASCAR has had its share of great finishes at the Daytona 500. It has had its share of less than stellar finishes as well. It could have been the weather, an on track incident, a bad call by NASCAR or horrible luck for your favorite driver, but everyone has a list of worst finishes. Daytona 500: The Guys Who Couldn't Get It Done!

When you talk about the worst drivers at Daytona, it's really not fair to say that a NASCAR Sprint Cup competitor is a bad driver. There are just those who are unable to get it done at a particular track like Daytona. Then there are the guys who really should not be racing in Sprint Cup because they are just not ready to be there. Daytona has taken a bit out of a lot of good careers, but here is a list of the not so good Daytona 500 competitors over the years.

A Fantasy Daytona 500 finish

Every fan has their favorite driver who they would like to see win the biggest NASCAR race of the season. Even though Jimmie Johnson has won every championship for the past five years he has a base of fans comparable to the Jr. Nation who would like to see him take home another one. Even Kyle Busch and Brad Keselowski with their not quite ready for prime time temperaments have a huge fan base who would like to see them win the Daytona 500.

The field isn't set yet. The only sure thing for the big race on Sunday is that Dale Earnhardt Jr. will start on the pole. It's his second front row start in two years. Jeff Gordon will start next to him on the outside pole. The rest of the field will be set by the finishing order of the Gatorade Duels on Thursday, February 17th

Daytona 500: The Legend

The Great American race grew out of the beaches of Daytona where drivers would race along the white sand through ruts and dunes to show who had the most talent and skill. Big Bill France saw more than those races on the beach and in 1959 the first 500 mile race was run at Daytona International Speedway.

The first 500 was billed as the "500 Mile International Sweepstakes", and international it was. The first 500 consisted of 56 drivers from the United States, Canada and Peru. This "southern redneck" sport started out with international appeal

Fireworks at NASCAR's 2011 Bud Shoot Out

NASCAR's last ditch attempt to slow the Sprint Cup cars down from the blistering 203 miles per hour they reached in Bud Shoot Out practice amounted to nothing more than a grain of sand placed in the way of a raging river Saturday night.

Until the big caution that saw Regan Smith close down on Carl Edwards subsequently wrecking Dale Earnhardt Jr. and several others, the average speed of the race was over 195 miles per hour and cars were ticking off speeds over 206 miles per hour

Daytona 500’s greatest drivers

When you classify the best Daytona 500 drivers of all time, do you only include the winners? Do you include the guys that led the most laps? Do you include the guys that had the most top tens? In 52 years of Daytona 500 racing there have only been 34 drivers have combined to win the 52 races, but of those drivers only a few pop up in the record books repeatedly.

NASCAR’s greatest Daytona 500 finishes

When you think about the greatest Daytona 500 finishes ever, there are three ways to look at it. There are the greatest finishes that grabbed the whole crowd with how hard fought they were. There are the greatest finishes that were wrought with emotion and grabbed the hearts of those who watched, and then there are the greatest finishes that are personal because it was your driver who came across the line to take the checkered flag.

NASCAR has had every type of winner in the Great American Race since the very first race at the legendary speedway back in 1959

Eight drivers have won the 500 multiple times and of those drivers Jeff Gordon, Michael Waltrip and Bill Elliot will be gunning for another victory in NASCAR's inaugural race.

Three man stand out in the history of the Daytona 500 as the greatest winners ever. Other will join the list over time because it is a book that will never be finished being written

NASCAR needs a short track cup series

NASCAR fans are loud. They are colorful. They are brash. They are opinionated. They are southern, northern, western, eastern and from all around the world. They want racing action. They are not afraid to say what the feel and a lot of them feel that Brian France and the NASCAR elite just don't list en to the fans. The counter voice to that is that "old school'' f ans just can't accept change. France has made numerous changes to Sprint Cup racing and NASCAR in general throughout his reign and just like in politics, not everyone is going to be happy. Change is part of life and if you can't accept it you can move on.

Travis Pastrana can run in NASCAR

The Daytona 500 may not be for another twenty or so days, but the 2011 NASCAR season kicked off with a bang this past weekend in Irwindale, California at the 2011 NASCAR Toyota All Star Showdown.

Wallace will make his first NASCAR Sprint Cup Start this February in the 500. The story of the weekend had to be extreme sports star Travis Pastrana
