Slurred Words On Motorsports - by RC Shivers

I Eat, Sleep and Breathe NASCAR!! I have raced in several divisions on the local level and been a crew member for a NASCAR Modified Tour competitor. My involvement in the sport dates back to the beginning of NASCAR's modern era. I give you an experienced inside look at the sport including news directly from Charlotte, the heart of NASCAR competition.

So grab a cold drink, set up your chair, turn on the tube, put on your scanner head phones and get ready for SLURRED WORDS ON MOTORSPORTS.

SLURRED WORDS ON MOTORSPORTS IS ALL YOUR NASCAR NEWS IN ONE PLACE!!!!!

NASCAR considers multiple changes, but are they too much?

NASCAR may have to change with the times to remain relevant as one of the premier sports in the country, but can too much change and masking the identity of the sport in a bland dilution of new wave media, points changes, car changes, qualifying changes and the old "have at it, boys" attitude lose more fans than it gains?

Some of the changes are great and are long overdue. When Robin Pemberton told the drivers "have at it, boys" last season, that statement returned some of the drama to the races that had disappeared in recent years when the NASCAR Gestapo stepped in to hand out penalties. Was the new attitude taken too far? Maybe, but if you ask the drivers now, they may say it's just fine. I think with a little common sense applied the "have at it, boys" attitude makes NASCAR what it is

The NASCAR Sprint Cup ROTY Title should have been shelved for 2010

With the 2011 NASCAR Sprint Cup season approaching fast, we have to wonder if the 2010 Rookie of the Year has worn out his welcome in Sprint Cup. Kevin Conway only participated in 28 of the 36 races on the NASCAR Sprint Cup circuit. In those 28 races he never finished better than 27th. Well, let's adjust that. He finished 14th in the summer race at Daytona. That race was a wreck-fest that saw most of the field taken out by mishaps.

Conway came to NASCAR Sprint Cup racing on the coat tails of major sponsorship, but no winning racing pedigree to speak of except some success in motocross and Legends cars. So how is it that he made it this far? Surely he must have had some talent to get picked up by Joe Gibbs Racing as a developmental driver. A quick look at Conway's website bio alludes to him being a success in the seven NASCAR Nationwide Series races he drove for JGR with top fives and top tens among Nationwide only competitors, but a look at the real stats show that his best finish was 20th. Fifty percent of those seven races he finished 30th or worse before he was released

The Intimidator's Top Ten

The February 2011 Daytona 500 starts off another great season of NASCAR Sprint Cup racing, but it also marks the 10th anniversary of Dale Earnhardt Sr.'s death at the world famous speedway. Some don't care, but most do. Love him or hate him, Dale Earnhardt defined NASCAR racing for four decades. He is the only driver that came close to Richard Petty's stats with seven NASCAR Sprint Cup championships.

His death sparked emotions in fans on both sides and spurred NASCAR into making significant changes that have saved lives. The wrecks that have occurred since his death could have taken the lives of many young drivers, but because of the attention that last wreck drew NASCAR now has safer cars, safer walls and safer seats. The irony is that Earnhardt was not the "safe" driver and some of his most memorable races define his tenacity and win at all costs attitude. Here is a list of some of Earnhardt's most memorable races (in chronological order only

Red Bull Racing Has High Hopes For 2011

Red Bull Racing has finally put together a lineup that could place both of their cars in this year's NASCAR Sprint Cup Chase for the Championship. Kasey Khane will fill the seat of the #4 while Brian Vickers will return behind the wheel of the #83. Vickers had his career stopped short in May of the 2010 season due to blood clots. Red Bull Racing went through several drivers in the #83 before landing Kasey Khane to finish out the 2010 season, while Scott Speed trudged along in the #82 team car never managing to crack the top 20 in 31of the 36 points races in 2010.

Speed was unceremoniously released from his contract at the end of the 2010 season and now Vickers has been cleared by doctors to return to racing. Now that the drama surrounding Khane's switch from Richard Petty Motor Sports has passed, and Vickers has returned to the car and team that took him to the Chase For The Championship in 2009, there is no reason why Red Bull Racing should not have at least one car in the chase in 2011

Alli Owens Tries To Make A NASCAR Name For Herself

NASCAR's Drive for Diversity has introduced a lot of young racers to the sport who might not have gotten a chance to show their skills otherwise. Women have been in NASCAR for years, but with Danica Patrick making noise by joining Dale Earnhardt Jr.'s JR Motorsports, it seems that more attention is being put on the women of racing than ever before.

The problem is that NASCAR is not paying attention to the right women. Patrick has had her chance in the best equipment and has shown repeatedly that she could not get the job done. There is a female racer out there who is getting the experience and has been working her way up through the ranks the traditional way and deserves an opportunity

Remembering Earnhardt!

My truck was up on the shop lift. The last bit of oil drained out of the motor when I heard the mechanic working on it say to his buddy, "Earnhardt doesn't have it anymore". I probably shouldn't have said anything considering all the Texaco Havoline #28 signs hanging in the shop, but I shouted out over the compressor "You don't know what you're talking about, dude."

The three of us argued Chevy versus Ford and Davey Allison versus Dale Earnhardt as they hopefully fixed my truck up the right way and didn't take the difference of opinion out on my Chevy Blazer. Looking back, we were arguing about two of the best NASCAR drivers that ever raced. Two days later I found myself sitting in the rain at Richmond International Speedway, freezing my butt off. The rain came and went and came again, but they said it would clear out and they would get the race in

NASCAR Says

Credit: Rusty Jarrett/Getty Images for NASCAR
After years of debate and complaining NASCAR has finally taken a definitive stand on Sprint Cup drivers pulling double duty to run for multiple championships in NASCAR's top tier series. It was announced this week that drivers must pick the championship they will compete for when they fill out their NASCAR license application.

On the 2011 application there is a section that asks which of the top three touring series the driver will choose to earn championship points in. Finally NASCAR has taken a stand on a complaint that has run through the garage for years. It may be 'fun' for the driver, but as a fan it's frustrating to see drivers like Carl Edwards, Kyle Busch and Brad Keselowski run away with the Nationwide Series championship and floor the less experienced competition

Dale Earnhardt Sr. Ten Years After

It took Dale Earnhardt Sr. 20 starts in the famed Daytona 500 to finally reach the win that would be regarded as one of the most memorable wins in NASCAR Sprint Cup history. 2011 will mark the tenth anniversary of the death of 'The Intimidator' in the same NASCAR flagship race just three years later.

Much has changed in the ten years since Earnhardt lost his life pushing his own drivers to the front of the field while holding off a charging Sterlin Marlin. Michael Waltrip won that race while Dale Earnhardt Jr. ran a close second, but all who watched felt that eerie feeling shoot down their spine when the black #3 plowed the wall in turn four head on
